Weather Consulting

What is meteorological consulting?

Consultant meteorologists are hired to provide weather data and expert analyses of past, current, and future weather events. They are often called on to provide weather information for cases in the legal system, insurance claims involving the weather, and expert testimony in court. The process of finding data for a past weather event then interpreting the data is called ‘forensic meteorology’. Other situations where it’s beneficial to hire a meteorological consultant are to provide specific weather forecasts, weather support during an event, and climate studies. In fact, anytime a situation involves the use and interpretation of weather data, it would be prudent to hire a meteorologist.

In today’s world, there are countless resources for weather information and data. It can be hard to determine which sources to trust and what data to use. At Equus Weather, it is of utmost importance that our clients get personalized weather support. Our goal is to help build your confidence when making important weather based decisions and recommendations.

Importance of Using a Certified Meteorologist

When looking for a meteorologist to conduct a forensic study or provide weather forecasting support, it is important to make sure the weather consultant you use has been certified. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has a certification program for meteorologists called the Certified Consultant Meteorologist (CCM) Program. The process typically takes a year. To become certified, a meteorologist must apply to the program, complete and pass a written exam, and stand for an oral exam in front of at least 3 CCM Board members. This formalized process helps ensure those who hire meteorologists are getting weather information from an expert source. More information on the AMS CCM program can be found on the AMS CCM website or by clicking on the logo to the left.

How to Find a CCM

Check the AMS List of CCM’s

You can check the AMS CCM website’s list of Certified Consultant Meteorologists at this link. To continue as an active CCM, a meteorologist needs to provide professional development hours to the AMS. CCM’s that are active do not have a code next to their name.

Check the ACM Website

The ACM, or Association of Certified Meteorologists, website has a ‘Find an Expert’ page. Many CCMs have a membership in the ACM. The ACM provides consultant meteorologists with a community in which to share information, mentorship, and to discuss concerns/issues.

Ask a Meteorologist

The weather community is made up of individuals that are passionate about weather and science. You will find that most meteorologists will eagerly discuss the weather industry and are willing to put you in contact with whomever can best meet your needs. Reach out to a trusted weather source in your community for a CCM recommendation. Examples of trusted weather sources include but are not limited to: National Weather Service meteorologists, Broadcast Meteorologists with CBMs (AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist), and university professors. There are many companies (e.g. wind energy firms) that employee meteorologists that could also help put you in contact with a CCM.
